A large antique traditional Indian Trunk known as a Pitara Chest, meaning Treasure Chest (or more literally ‘a box full of treasures’ in Hindi). These Pitara Trunk were traditionally used to store a families treasures – from jewellery, manuscripts and silks to family heirlooms, and often containing secret compartments.

Indian Trunk chests are usually rustic, carved or painted, with many having copper, bronze or even silver gilt detailed coverings. Most are from Rajasthan or Gujarat in western India. Often these chests are now used as sideboards, consoles and storage chests for bedding. They are a good sized utility piece that can be placed anywhere in the home.
